Early into their implementation of SciQuest’s SelectSite, Qatar University representatives visited the UC San Diego campus in March to observe and learn about best in class procurement strategies.

Mr. Mohammed S. Al-Saadi, Director of Procurement, and his team spent the day speaking with different members of UC San Diego’s Procurement & Contracts department.  UC San Diego Associate Controller and Chief Procurement Officer, Ted Johnson, shared some of the challenges to consider while rolling out an eProcurement system in a university setting. He also shared the organizational structure of the department, emphasizing the innovative benefits of building out an adept analytics and marketing presence.  The Deputy Director of Strategic Procurement, Todd Adams shared strategies around increasing user adoption of an eProcurement tool, as well as best practices and observations of the team’s use of RFPs, formal competitive bids, price rationale, and source justification.

The group also met with UC San Diego’s SciQuest Site Administrator, Nikki Giaquinta, to discuss tips and tricks around implementation.  Qatar’s Section Head of Marketing & Communications for the Core Admin Departments, Ms. Amani Othman, spent the day learning about the UC San Diego Procurement & Contracts communication, outreach, and training approach, as well as logistical strategies around holding procurement-related campus events. In addition to procurement related topics, the Qatar team also met with Jenn Glassman to talk about Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and the recently implemented SalesForce application used to track and manage procurement inquiries from campus users.

As the partnership between the two universities continues to develop and grow, the UC San Diego team has been graciously invited to attend Qatar University’s Tsawaq Day (Supplier Day).
